About the Clara Hatton Center

Clara Hatton, Road Repairs, 1945, etching on paper

Founded in 2020, the Clara Hatton Center is a 501(c)(3) organization that exists to foster an awareness and understanding of the life and work of Clara Anna Hatton (1901-91) and her contributions to the visual arts culture of Kansas and the Mountain-Plains region. Exhibitions, programs, and research are the means through which the Center advances this mission. The Center maintains an annual schedule of exhibitions, presents programs (lectures, demonstrations, workshops, etc.) for all ages and audiences, and provides the general public and the scholarly community with access to Hatton’s work and papers.

Central to Hatton’s practice as an artist and a teacher was her conviction that encounters with art (viewing, making, and studying) are meaningful experiences that help us better understand the human experience, regardless of age, education, race, or socio-economic standing. The Center embraces this belief, and the many facets of Hatton’s art and life provide the wellspring of material with which we strive to facilitate active encounters with art.

The Clara Hatton Center is governed by a board of directors and operates under the direction of Bill North.
